America's Cup practice in Newport

America's cup fast racing Catamarans are all warming up here for the Newport Rhode Island leg of the World Series racing and promotion of the event.

The race village and team venues are all set up out of containers at Fort Adams just opposite the NYC, the boats and all the equipment fit inside a container.  It was just amazing to see the huge village and race control pop up over a week.

Racing starts Thursday until Sunday.  Oracle has two boats as does Prada, also racing Emerites team New Zealand , Korea and the French. I will get more information about the starting teams tomorrow,

Newport seems to be a perfect venue with the afternoon sea breeze that kicks in in the summer and really turns on a good show.   I was out watching practice yesterday and the boats were at fully loaded and speeding , sailing past us at 20kn in 18 kn of wind, a huge wall of spray and mist as they roared by us, all the crew are in padded clothes and wearing helmets and they completely cover their body with special sailing clothes for these type of extreme yachts.

The trampoline between the two hulls allows the crew to take advantage of being able to throw them selves from the wind ward hull to leeward to prepare for a tack. Like he is air Born to get to the other side.  The bow on these cats spend a lot of the time under the water and the crew rapidly trim aft when they nose dive a bit.

With the backdrop of the New York yacht club  Harbour court Mansion the fast AC45 all look a treat, with their winged sail( the complete rig is 300kg) to propelling or fly them through the the water.

A huge spectator fleet of mega yachts are going to form a box around the race course, so I am sure I will get some great pictures to share with you.

Newport is sure a sailing made town and with school out for the summer there is a lot of interest.
